There is nothing like resort-style hot springs, Class-5 whitewater rafting, Rocky Mountain lakes, and historic towns to have one heck of a Memorial Day weekend!
We spent our first day relaxing in the pools at Glenwood Springs Hot Springs Resort. They have one pool that is about 93 degrees and another one that is 104 degrees. Just the perfect balance.
Angie was so moved by our experience that she got a tattoo for Vess.
Our hotel was pretty much in downtown Glenwood Spring so I suggested that we walk, but at the last minute we decided to take the car. During our dinner at the Italian Underground, a huge rainstorm hit and get this. Do you see all those dry people? They made me run two blocks in a torrential downpour to get the car and then drive the car up the sidewalk to get them. For shame!
Next we hiked to Hanging Lake. It was Class-A beautiful. You walk for about 1 1/2 mile along a cascading river before you arrive at the lake with its waterfalls and crystal clear water. When we arrived it started to rain, but that didn't stop James. He walked right out into the middle of the lake on a fallen tree. The lake was actually quite deep. Oh, James!
Finally, we stayed in Leadville, CO. Talk about a small town USA! We needed a place to eat and finally flagged a local down--only to discover that we are a very diverse country.
On our last day, we traveled to AVA rafting to conquer The GAUNTLET! I always thought Class 5 rapids were impassible, but when I asked the lady she assured me that they are only "extremely difficult."
After suiting up in full wetsuits, splash jackets, life jackets, and helmets we took a little bus ride to the put in. We got instruction and set out on our wet and wild adventure. And we all survived!
